Vote Today Ohio–Day 1–On the Ground

VTOOhio election law permits voter registration through October 6.  But Early Voting begins September 30.  This means that for one week, Ohio residents may register and vote early in all of Ohio’s 88 counties.

IBEW hallIn 2004, Ohioans cast 5.5 million votes for Bush and Kerry, with Bush winning by just over 2%: 119,000 votes cast in 11,360 precincts, an average margin of only 10 votes per precinct!

Today my wife and I were at the Vote Today Ohio orientation in the IBEW hall in Columbus. Beginning tomorrow morning, we will be in Kent, OH, exhorting Kent State students to take a short shuttle ride (I’m driving) to the Portage County Voting Center where they can register and then immediately vote.

Vote Today Ohio, a grass roots PAC that came into existence only last month, has gathered volunteers from all over the country.

They include two kids on their honeymoon, lots of Californians and New Yorkers, ex-pats from from Ottawa and London, and Howard Dean’s mother.

We will work college campuses across the state and inner city neighborhoods most apt to have low voter turnout. The goal is to increase the early vote substantially.

More tomorrow…including whether life on this planet can survive as the fall out (bail out) drifts down from Wall Street.

Early voting is a fabulous thing! It’s a silly idea to think that everyone will be able to vote on one day. Go Democracy! Go DAD!
