California’s Sneaky Propositions 98 & 99

eminent domainThere are two competing propositions on the California Direct Primary (June 3) ballot:

Proposition 98Government Acquisition, Regulation of Private Property
Proposition 99Eminent Domain. Acquisition of Owner-Occupied Residence

If both measures pass, the one with the most votes prevails.

Do not click away from this page, my non-California readers, this post is not about the Propositions. It is about snarky, sneaky, sleazy tactics. Continue reading “California’s Sneaky Propositions 98 & 99”

The Filly is Put Down

Kentucky derbyHillary ClintonWhile campaigning in Kentucky on Thursday, Hillary Clinton, identifying with Eight Belles, the only filly running in the 134th Kentucky Derby, said, “I want everybody to place a little money on the filly.”

Today, Eight Belles came in second to Big Brown, collapsed, broke both front ankles, and had to be euthanized on the track.

Coincidence? Metaphor? Cosmic joke?

Rev. Wright’s Record: 10 Wins, 1 Loss, 2 No Decisions

Rev WrightPolls show Obama on the rocks, with pollsters suggesting that his association with Rev. Wright is one important factor in his recent decline. (Note: these polls were run prior to Rev. Wright’s National Press Club talk and Obama’s subsequent repudiation of him.)

The media lens is tightly focused on Wright’s assertion that HIV was invented as a weapon of genocide against people of color. In a previous post, I said that I found his HIV comments laughable. But the punditocracy uses the ludicrousness of Rev. Wright’s position on this one issue to ignore his other indisputably correct rants.

Let’s tally up the assertions in his infamous “Confusing God and Government” sermon—better known to the TV-addicted public as the “God Damn America” speech: Continue reading “Rev. Wright’s Record: 10 Wins, 1 Loss, 2 No Decisions”

Will There Be Water in Lake Chad?

Lake Chad mapThink also about water.

Lake Chad is an exemplar. At one time the world’s sixth largest lake, included in four African countries (Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria), it has, in less than a half-century, shrunk to one-tenth its former size. Continue reading “Will There Be Water in Lake Chad?”

Embarrassingly Partisan Baseball

clemensSteroids in Major League Baseball should not be a political issue.  But it is.

Who’s the liar? Brian McNamee or Roger Clemens? I don’t know…and actually, I don’t much care. Damn them all. Professional baseball is full of over-amped egos and self-defined Masters of the Universe.

Yesterday, however, continuing the outrageously partisan approach to what is, by its very nature, a non-partisan issue [cf. my earlier post on this], Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform issued a 109-page report [downloadable here] that supports Clemens over McNamee.
